Three 1940s Testimonies

Here is a sampling of just three 1940s testimonies. Our Founder, George W. Elliott, loved to read testimonies. He also corresponded with many people, both those who were believers and were following his instructions for mailing out tracts systematically, and those who had become believers because of the tracts mailed to them. He treasured those testimonies and put them into his scrapbook albums.

A Tract Read 70 Times

Here's a true story of a tract read 70 times, before it bore fruit and more fruit! It appeared in the February 1959 issue of Western Tract News, in just short note;

Strasbourg, Sk. , E. J. Duncan Ross, “We were told a few months ago of a Buddhist priest in Korea who received a tract. He read it, not once, but 70 times. After he read it the 70th time the eyes of his understanding were opened. He accepted the Lord, and also led several of his brothers to Him. Like Paul we sow, another may water - But God gives the increase.”

Can you imagine such persistence? That Buddhist priest read that tract, probably just a folded leaflet, or possibly a small booklet, but he couldn't understand it at first. He kept re-reading it, wanting to understand the message. Finally, after the 70th time his mind was enlightened and he grasped the message of salvation. He accepted the Lord Jesus as his Saviour and then enthusiastically told his brothers of this message.

We have no idea how many people can be affected by one printed sheet of paper with the gospel on it. If a human witness had spoken to that priest, he or she might have given up after the first or second try, but that printed tract could be re-read 70 times at the reader's convenience, until the understanding came. The new birth happened. Eternal life came to the man's heart, and he promptly became a missionary to those around him!

Distribute tracts freely; you never know when a tract may be read 70 times, and then bear fruit!

Oh What Joy! 2nd of Three 1940's Testimonies

Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3.

Here is how I came to find Christ, and when. It was in June, 1940. I got a letter and tracts from a Christian friend. I read them, and I thought it was time I gave my heart to Christ, and I did. Oh, what joy I had! “What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36.

I dreamed one night that Jesus came to meet me. As I went out to meet Him I held out my arms and said, “Jesus is coming!” Oh, what joy it was!

I believe Christ died for me. I know that God has forgiven my sins The Lord has done a lot for me. Satan had a great power over me. He had tied me in his chains, and it seemed impossible to get loose. I was very hot-tempered; I would get so mad at the least little thing, and I had so many secret sins in my heart.

I thank God that He saved my soul, and I ask everyone to come to Christ too.

Lily, Saved While Listening to Radio

saved while listening to radio

I shall never forget when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Saviour; it was Aug. 18, 1940, at the age of 17.

Before that I never thought much about a Saviour; all my sister and I thought about was dances and other worldly amusements.

How well I remember when I went to stay at my older sister's place for awhile. There I thought that I did not have the privileges and pleasures that a girl of my age should have. I knew I had sinned, but then I thought about other people who seemed to sin more than I. I used to get lonely and downhearted, and sometimes I wondered what there was in the world for me to live for.

I used to listen to the radio services Sundays. I then got to thinking about my soul. I just didn't know what it meant to be born again. I also used to think that I was still too young for anything like that; and I would comfort myself by thinking that such stuff as conversion was for older people, as I was not brought up in a Christian home.

One Sunday my soul was hungry, and my heart was longing to have comfort. My sister, her husband, and myself were listening to a radio service. Rev. Hutcheson was speaking over CFCN from the Prophetic Bible Institute, Calgary. How I thank God for radios, for it was right there I accepted the most wonderful Saviour Jesus Christ. Something I cannot explain happened to me, but I knew that all my sins were forgiven.

Verily, verily, I say into you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” John 10:1.

Now I am happy, and thank God for this Christian in our family, but I am praying that my mother and sisters will accept Jesus Christ before it is too late
