Wait On The Lord
Usually people are in a hurry today. Stop for a while on any uptown street corner on Saturday afternoon and you will see people rushing about. Watch the flow of traffic on a busy street and you will notice how much of a hurry people are to get to their destination.
Sometimes we are guilty of being in a hurry with God. We get up in the morning, rush about to get to work on time, maybe say a short prayer before leaving the house, but really does God have time to speak to our hearts and direct our lives? You cannot squeeze God into your little mold and expect Him to fit into your set patterns. God wants you to fit into His plan, and He wants you and me to pattern our lives by His will.
The Bible says, "Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait I say, on the Lord." Now this advice is given to us by divine inspiration through a man who had great responsibilities, King David. He had learned the value of waiting on God, and taking time to get directions for a useful, purposeful life from our Heavenly Father.
There is no one who knows what your needs are any better than God does. There is no one who is more concerned that your life be useful and filled with purpose than God. He knows just what you need; He is able to supply your needs. He knows where you can best serve, and He has a plan for your life. This plan of God for you will be revealed to you and can be known if you are willing to wait on God and let Him direct you.
It all begins with an honest heart, and the question, "Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?" Ask the Lord honestly, "What do you want me to do today? Here's my life this day. Somehow use me for your honor and glory this day as you see best." Be quiet for a while before God. Let Him speak to you through that still small voice. Life is too short to waste on our plans and work if these plans are not in harmony with the will of God.
You may recall the incident in the Bible when Jesus went into the garden of Gethsemane to pray. He had Peter, James and John with Him. As He left them for only one short hour, He said to them, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation." And when Jesus came back a while later He found them asleep. They didn't have time to watch and pray. It was only a few hours later that one of these disciples, Simon Peter, denied his Lord three times before the enemies of the Saviour. Why? He fell asleep and failed to watch and pray.
It is never a waste of time to wait on God, and get our directions from Him. It is He who alone can give you the power to live a useful and fruitful life that will produce within you contentment, purpose, and power. Remember that Jesus on one occasion said, "For without me you can do nothing." Have you ever sat by the bedside of a loved one who was twisting and writhing in pain? You were helpless; you could do nothing.
Some time ago a paper carried an interesting article regarding the efforts of a suitor to win the heart and the love of a woman by showering her with costly gifts, only to lose her in the end. On a Wednesday she received a bundle of record albums of love songs in the mail. On Thursday a bouquet of flowers three feet wide came to her door. On Friday she received a 500-word telegram. On Saturday a big newspaper ad appeared requesting her love. On Sunday, a twelve-page love letter was sent to her. And on Monday, there were two 30-second radio commercials asking for her hand in marriage! The lady was shocked at such expense and the methods that were used but there was no response from her. Her love was not for sale and he stood helpless.
There are some things which you cannot purchase with silver or gold. There are values that cannot be measured in monetary terms. Some things only God can do and God will do them only if you wait on Him and ask Him to make the way. Jesus said, "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you."
Take time to wait on God. Daniel, one of God's great men sought the Lord regularly, three times a day. No wonder his character is still admired by boys and girls who know the Biblical stories. Get alone with God often. Do it every day. You will find new strength and power coming into your life if you seek His presence and guidance. Make time to wait on God.
