"For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not
of works, lest anyone should boast."
Ephesians 2: 8 & 9
Thinking back to this past summer in our area of the world, we can't help
but think of the devastating flooding that took place. On the morning of
June 20th, thousands of people awakened without any knowledge
whatsoever that their lives were in any kind of danger. Morning routines
and making plans did not include the reality that was soon to take place.
Three people did not live to see the end of that day.
Imagine that you are like so many who faced this reality, all alone, looking
out your window at a heavy rainfall that quickly causes the streets to fill up
to become a raging river, making its way inside your home, rising higher
and higher. You realize that you are seriously facing a crisis. Not only are
your home and possessions in imminent danger, but your very life. The
power is off and telephone service is out.
There is nowhere you can run to and no means to call for help. Suddenly, you hear one of several noises that
many people heard that day. It may be a boat, a helicopter, a front end
loader, or even a combine! You are helpless and cannot save yourself,
suddenly realizing this is your only way out. You would never consider, on
an ordinary day, climbing into the shovel of a front end loader, above a
raging river, with only the clothes on your back.
You have two choices - stay in your current situation where you will lose your life or simply
choose to put your faith in the operator of the loader to save you! He is
doing all the work, delivering you from death. You yourself have nothing
to boast about but consider that operator to be your hero - your deliverer or
While this is such a feeble illustration compared to God's redeeming grace,
we are reminded of His precious gift of salvation to us through His Son,
Jesus Christ. The basis of our salvation is His grace and the means is faith
alone. Since no one can bring salvation to himself by his own efforts, no
one can boast. The source of our salvation is God's grace, the gift of God.
"Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by
faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of
God." Romans 5:1& 2.
