Satan and the Occult - Chapter One

by Bruce Pringle

The Origin of Satan and Demons

One of the largest sections in any secular bookstore today is the occult or supernatural section. Paul, the apostle, writing to his convert Timothy, was inspired to say, "Now the Spirit speaks expressly that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of demons." Spiritism or demonism has approximately thirty forms, all of which are increasing in every part of the world. In the last fifteen years spiritists in Brazil have increased by the millions while England boasts of approximately two hundred spiritist churches.

God's Word is the final authority for the believer in Christ. Many ideas or theories have been presented in the discussion of Satan's origin. Two of Israel's prophets, Ezekiel and Isaiah, inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, give the correct position of the origin of Satan. Note the words of Ezekiel's prophecy:

You have been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of your tabrets and of your pipes was prepared in you in the day that you were created. You are the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set you so: you were upon the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the middle of the stones of fire. You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, till iniquity was found in you. By the multitude of your trade they have filled the middle of you with violence, and you have sinned: therefore I will cast you as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy you, O covering cherub, from the middle of the stones of fire. Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty, you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness: I will cast you to the ground, I will lay you before kings, that they may behold you. You have defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trade: therefore will I bring forth a fire from the middle of you, it shall devour you, and I will bring you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold you. All they that know you among the people shall be astonished at you: you shall be a terror, and never shall you be any more.

Verses thirteen and fifteen of the passage indicate clearly how Satan came into being. "...in the day that you were created," and "...from the day that you were created", undoubtedly states that God created Lucifer. Very well-meaning people try to protect God by stating that God could never or would never create such a despicable, diabolic, devilish beast. On the contrary, God did create Lucifer who became Satan. It must be made clear that God gave Lucifer a free moral choice as He does human beings; either to serve God or serve self.

Lucifer was the anointed cherub; the wisest, the most beautiful, the most powerful and the most influential created being. Lucifer had access to the holy mountain of God or the place where God Almighty dwelt. Lucifer was the commander in chief of all of God's creation. Lucifer was the apparent guardian, protector and security of the region of the throne of God, not on the earth but in the highest heaven. He was the superlative of all God's creation.

Philpott, relating to the God-given attributes of Satan, gives his assessment of the devil's modern day power and evil devices:

Satan has lots of knowledge. He has the second greatest computer and data analyzers in the universe. He has had all the data available to collect and evaluate. It is no great choice for Satan to learn how to predict the future with considerable accuracy, so the occultist predictions of the future are no great thing. But it is often enough to convince and deceive the unsuspecting.

The origin of demons or wicked spirits is closely connected to the great sin of Satan. Orr wrote, "from the creative hand of God, came the myriads of angels, including the ones which were to rebel and fall under the judgment of God...in other words, the demons."
