![]() A Midnight Anthem"AT midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God." Acts 16:25. The
queerest choir practice surely ever recorded! Prison walls are accustomed to sighs, but seldom
resound with songs. Yet praise is not incompatible with bonds and shackles. Some will make a prison
of a sick room, or drudgery of a task. Others, helped by heavenly grace, will turn the sick chamber
into the King's music-room, and a tedious duty into a hymn of praise. We note that for Paul and
Silas, prayer and praise brought deliverance. I, too, escape my chains by soaring heavenwards in
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.
