How to Get Victory Over Fear
How can you get victory over fear? You know - that fear, “What will they think!?” The fear that ties you in knots; you don't know what to say or do.
You are afraid to go out in public, aren't you?
That was me. I was afraid of so many things and so many people. Afraid of not being accepted; of wearing the wrong thing; of not fitting in.
Really, I'm different from others. I only have one hand. People notice me as I do things differently.
You are too. We are all different to some degree from others. All of us are afraid of someone, or something, whether real or imagined.
Satan likes to operate with that particular tool, FEAR. With fear, he can make us feel powerless, unloved and confused.
When afraid, we are too weak to do the things we should. We miss out on the good things in life – and we lose many a chance for good friendships.
What's more, fear is contagious. We just get near someone who is afraid, and we get scared too! It's an ugly, unhappy way to live, isn't it?
Even some Christians live in fear at times – which is crazy since God does not want us to be afraid, and has provided all the resources we need for joy and peace. But once our spirit has picked up an infection of fear, it seems to cancel our ability to remember the truth.
One day while I was walking and praying, God jogged my memory by bringing 2 Timothy 1:7 to mind. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Obviously, God had not been sending me this spirit of fear! That could only mean one thing – it came from Satan. Oh no, I'd played right into his evil, wicked little scheme to trap me.
Thinking some more, as I walked, I realized that God wanted to give me power and love – which, come to think of it, is the true opposite of fear.
Furthermore, God wanted to give me a sound mind. Now that would help me to make wise decisions, and keep me from missing out on the good things in life, like a job, and friends, and a better feeling about myself.
Suddenly I felt badly about giving in to Satan's whispers, and losing out on all that God was holding out for me to take. I wanted to make up with the Lord, and get into a right relationship with Him again!
So while I kept walking, I prayed and told God how sorry I was for giving in to fears. “I'm sorry I forgot Your love! I forgot... no, I ignored Your promise to live in me, and cause Your love to flow through me toward others. If I'd let You do that I would have loved them more than thinking about me being scared of them!”
“Oh Lord, I've been thinking and feeling like someone who's lost their mind, when all along, You have been waiting to give me a sound mind. That's a mind that can think objectively, isn't it?”
“Lord Jesus, please come abide in me and fill me with Your Holy Spirit, so that I have Your love and sound mind.”
If this is how you feel, you can do the same thing; confess your sins to God, and invite the Holy Spirit to live in you. He will guide your thinking, and give you courage to do what is right, and the power to think more about what other people need than what scares you.
There really is a lot of evil out there, and we can never meet it in our own strength. (If we want to live by our own power, we WILL fail, and have plenty of reasons to be afraid!)
The secret God has shared in the Bible is that we do not have to do it on our own. Let's repeat it again, together; "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)
God is not saying that we'll never get sick, or that everyone will adore us. Sometimes situations do get worse. But He has promised to abide in us by His Precious Spirit, so that we will have the joy and strength to meet and rise above each of those bad situations.
Besides, we'll be in shape to help others. People need us to love and care for them too.
Are you afraid that God won't accept you; that you have done too many bad things; that you will fail God; that others will laugh at you; that you will go back to your old way of living?
No matter how many times we fail God. He is always waiting and willing to forgive us. He loves us more than we can ever imagine.
Since it is God's acceptance we want so we can live for eternity in Heaven, it should be quite secondary to us what mere people think of us.
If you want to experience victory over fear but don't have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, then I suggest you admit to Him that you need Him; confess your sin to Him and believe He is the Son of the Living God. Ask Him to wash you whiter than snow, as He promised in Isaiah 1:18. Invite Him into your life and give Him the control.
Then watch what He will do in you, through you and for you, all in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 10:9,10 says, "That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
The same power that makes you clean helps you live without fear.
Would you like to be free from fear and live in victory? This could be your normal lifestyle.
As you just read, you can confess all your sins and fears to God, and accept the gift of salvation He is holding out to you. The Lord will come to abide in your life by His Holy Spirit, and He brings all the love and peace and joy that comes from God. That will replace the fears that hounded you before.
It is good to spend time every day reading some passages in the Bible, and getting to know more of what God promises and has in store for you.
One of the extra ideas for victory over fear you will find in the Bible, includes praising and thanking God for all His good gifts, and the specific help you are receiving in your daily life.
When we praise God it drives Satan away, and he leaves us alone for a while.
In one Bible story, (2 Chronicles chapter 20), God told King Jehoshaphat to send the singers ahead of the soldiers into a battle, one that they were bound to lose from all natural appearances. They obeyed, and God went ahead of them, and caused the enemy camp to panic and kill each other. There was no battle for the Israelites to fight!
Praising the LORD in the midst of a difficult time is not usually the first thing that comes to mind, is it?
Yet, it is what God wants us to do. It takes our minds off ourselves and our struggles and focuses our thoughts on God. When our focus is on Him, all other things fall into His perspective. We begin to see things the way He does.
This does not mean that it is easy to praise the LORD for what is going on in our lives. It took me 44 years to be able to thank Him for the loss of my hand. I am able to thank Him because He uses me to encourage others by continuing on in spite of the difficulties. I am learning to praise Him for the lessons He teaches me through my struggles.
Praise changes our attitude toward people and circumstances. When our attitude falls in line with how God wants us to think and to see things, then He is able to make changes and the battle is won. Most of the time I find that the change has to take place in me before other changes can occur, but then to step back and see what He does humbles me. God can do in an instant what I could never hope to do.
No matter what is going on in your life now, or what scary prospect looms in your future, be encouraged to trust God to: forgive all your sins, abide in you by His Holy Spirit, and bring love, peace, joy and much more into your life.
As you learn to praise and worship Him – you will notice that the Lord God sees to it that you are treated fairly. God will provide for your daily needs like food, clothing, and a place to live. If you ask for it, and accept it by faith, you will have a resounding victory over all the fears that have tried to ruin your life all this time.
Do not delay! Repent and receive Christ as your own personal Saviour and Lord today!
We would also appreciate hearing from you, and we can send you Bible study lessons to help you learn more of God's instructions and principles for victory over all your fears and sins, and great joy and meaning in the new life you can have as a Bible-believing Christian.
