I Cannot Get Away From God
A young man had an excellent job in London, England. He made good wages, had a kind boss, and had
a comfortable place to live in. But there was one thing that annoyed him. His mother lived close by
and visited him regularly. It wasn't the visits that bothered him but the subject of her
conversation - whenever she came she spoke to him about the Lord Jesus Christ and the need of her
son to receive Christ.
Finally he said to her one day, "I can't stand this talk about religion any longer. Unless you drop
the subject I'm going to move away from here where I won't have to hear such talk."
"Bill, as long as I can I will speak to you about the Lord, and to the Lord about you," replied his
mother.
The young man was able to find another job in a different part of England. You may think that
Bill's mother was wrong in causing him to make this move. Would it not have been wiser to have said
less and waited for the appropriate time to have shared Christ? Let's see.
Bill reported to his new job and on his first day was given keys to a company car. To his surprise
the boss himself got into the car with him. "He wants to see how I drive," Bill thought to
himself.
He had just merged with the traffic when his employer said to him, "Bill, tell me, are you saved?"
If the question had been spoken directly from heaven it could not have struck him with greater
consternation! "I got away from my mother by taking this job, but I haven't gotten away from God,"
Bill thought to himself.
He couldn't answer his boss and began trembling from head to foot so that he could hardly drive. His
employer shared the good news concerning Jesus Christ with him just as his mother had done so often.
Only, now, he was listening!
He soon realized that it was Jesus Christ, the Son of God, that he had been rejecting rather than
his mother. He saw for the first time that he was a lost sinner. He acknowledged his need of
forgiveness and salvation and invited the Savior to come into his heart and life.
Following his conversion Bill became sick. Often his boss came to see him. They would read the Word
of God together and pray. Soon the love and grace of the Savior he had previously rejected became a
reality to him. He realized how merciful God had been to him as a scoffer. He saw how Christ had
taken his punishment - that he was now forgiven in spite of the way he had rejected both the Lord
and his mother. He wrote to her and shared with her the good news, "God has followed me here and
saved my soul!"
Maybe you too have been trying to get away from God. What grace that you have not succeeded!
Consider that God is offering you forgiveness and eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should
not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved." (Acts 16:31)
