Chapter VI
His Preciousness
"Commit thy way unto the Lord." Psalm 37:5
It was only by committing my way unto the Lord and entirely believing He would undertake
for me and prosper my endeavours that I carried on. Many rely on themselves, their courage, their fortitude, but I knew there was nothing in me to rely on. I was helpless. It was God alone who would work for me. I sought His help. I believed He would give it. I could recount many, many incidents when I believe the Lord definitely guided, protected, taught me and brought to pass that which was His will and for my good.
It is not hard for me to believe in miracles. The marvel of it is that God stooped to save me and keeps watching over me in His love and mercy. Oh the multitudes who can say the same.
Once an expected cheque did not come. I called the different post offices. They said they would put on a tracer. That was Saturday. I asked them to wait until Monday. I prayed, "Dear Lord, if it is around, let me find it so as not to put others to needless trouble."
Monday morning, going through the hall in the home where I was visiting, I saw the postman drop the mail through the slot in the door. One letter fell down a crack where the floor meets the sill. I went to the basement and behind a cupboard, against the wall were fifteen letters, dating back five years. Mine was there.
Though I lived in that home over a year, never before that morning, nor afterward, did I go through the hall when the postman dropped the mail in. Oh the joy of answered prayer! Praise the Lord for His wondrous ways.
"Go Around that hill"
I was living in an apartment house where the grounds were not landscaped the first summer. It was too dusty to sit outside. Not being able to walk far, one day I expressed the desire to the Lord for strength to go somewhere and sit in the shade. Instantly, inaudibly, I heard the words, "Go around the hill." I went to the window and saw a hill I had seen daily for five months.
Calling a friend, I told her and asked if she would come with me. She did. Joyfully I went. I knew there was something around that hill. On the far side was quite an area of grass, large shade trees and shrubs. We went there twice daily that summer.
To this day, and I believe it always will, it moves me deeply as I relate this episode. This marvellous answer to prayer. When the need is urgent, the answer comes quickly. Mostly, answers to prayer come to me by an inner Voice, that of the Holy Spirit; an impression that I must heed, a green light, as it were. Again, by passages from God's Word or a circumstance reveals the right direction.
Results always prove when the Holy Spirit leads. It is not hard for me to believe the Bible. There are many mysteries God does not expect us to understand. We accept and make use of, each day, facilities that we cannot explain. Air and electricity are not seen but we know their power. Job 37:5.
"Who hath seen the wind? Neither you not I. When the trees bow low their heads, the wind is passing by."
Things don't just happen, they are planned."
One minor incident of my youth I must relate. Yet none of these things are trivial to me.
It was my first day at college. The halls were crowded with laughing, happy students. For some, it was their first year. Others were greeting old friends.
I was standing, looking on, feeling strange and very much alone. There was another girl beside me. In a few minutes she turned to me and said, "I wonder if it is possible that you and I are room-mates." We exchanged names and sure enough we were.
I soon found out she also sought counsel of the Lord. I am confident that I asked His help for that day. There we were, in the right place at the right time.
Be not over anxious." Philippians 4:6
"When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I." Psalm 61:2. That was
my condition one morning. I was deeply concerned about a loved one. I earnestly cried unto God for
His help.
Suddenly Philippians 4:6, came to me. "In nothing be anxious, but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God and the peace of God which
passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Instantly, I
said, "Dear Lord, just as I have accepted salvation, freely from you, so I am going to take this
peace you have promised." Oh the riches of His grace! My whole being was filled with rapture. I went
through the house, the rest of the day, singing a hymn I had not heard for years.
His Power can make you what you ought to be, His blood can cleanse your soul and make you free, His love will fill your life and you will see, 'Twas best for Him to have His way with thee." C.S.N.
That day a great and wonderful experience came to me, a lasting one. A fuller understanding of the Power of the Holy Spirit.
Ever since when a worry or a burden comes, and satan sees they do come, I say, "Dear Lord, is there anything I can do about it? If so, show me, if not, I'll leave it with you." It is not always lifted at once, but it does lift and a great peace pervades.
Too often one takes the burden to the Lord and brings it away again. We hinder the Holy Spirit in this way. "Cast they burden upon the Lord and He will sustain thee." Psalm 55. "Casting all your care upon God for He careth for you." 1 Peter 5:7. The Lord permits the rough places that we may grow stronger in Him. If the way were always smooth we would become too complacent and stagnant.
To God be the glory, great things He hath done,
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
and opened the Life gate that all may go in.
Great things He hath taught us, Great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer and higher and greater will be,
Our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see," F.J.C.
Just received a letter from my sister, Gladys. She has just experienced another wonderful answer to prayer.
She was away from home and on her return trip, the car was making a terrible racket. She prayed, "Dear Lord if the car is not safe enough to reach home, stop it at S.. where I know a mechanic." Just as she reached the mechanic's place of business, the car stopped dead.
He told her if she had driven it much farther, she would have been burnt up. How this increases
one's faith. Praise Him! Praise Him!
