I Know God Answers Prayer - by Ada Welch

Chapter II

Under His Watchful Eye

"For He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways" Psalm 91:11.

There are many prayers answered that Christian parents have offered for their children. From the cradles, children are protected from danger, brought back to health when very ill.

When I was eleven years old, my father moved to a new pastorate. A river ran through the centre of the town back of the stores.

One day my younger sister and I decided to go bathing. We went down behind the stores, took a few steps into the water and I stopped. I could not proceed. We returned home. Later in telling an adult, she said, "It is a good thing you did not go on. We do not bathe on that side of the river. The channel comes close there. You would have stepped into it." Guardian angels, yes. Answered prayers, surely.

This concern for little children need not surprise us. We read that Jesus, while on earth, took them up in His arms and blessed them. He even called one of them to Him and setting him in their midst, said that we must be humble as a child. Even the hairs of our head are numbered and nothing is of too little consequence for Him to be mindful of. Some would dispute this but Christians know that it is true.

Two years later there was another unforgettable occurrence.

My parents had always been very watchful of their children and we older girls were taught to take the responsibility seriously. I know, I spent many hours watching over the two youngest. How the following happened I do not remember.

That particular day, we became aware that the baby, who would have been about fifteen months old, was not with us. We ran to the door and saw this terrifying scene.

The little darling was toddling down the middle of the road as fast as her little legs would take her. She was laughing with arms flung wide. Not many yards from her was a yoke of oxen which had broken away from their owner and was running up the hill. No earthly person could have reached the baby in time, though we tried. Just as those oxen got within a few feet of her they turned and ran down the hill.

You may be sure that much thanks went up to the One, altogether lovely, who watches over us and delivers us.

The Faith of a Child.

A dear friend of mine told me of her two and a half year old grandson and his faith. The mother had bought presents for the three children. She gave the two girls their gifts but did not give the little boy his; nor did she explain. This Christian mother had taught her children to pray from their hearts, not memorize prayers.

When bedtime came the little fellow poured out all to Jesus. He had said nothing all day but his little heart was bursting with grief because his sisters had received gifts and he had not been given any.

If we would only bring each daily problem, however small or great, to the One who longs to be All in all to us. He has promised to be a father to the fatherless, a husband to the widow, our Burden-bearer, Comforter, our Elder Brother.
