Mission Highlight: The Board of Directors

One Tuesday evening every other month, a handful of people arrive at the mission and settle around a long table for a Board meeting. There is friendly banter as they prepare to go through the agenda for the evening.

Currently the Board consists of Archie Loewen, the President, Arnold Stobbe, the Director, Lynn Moen, Allen Martens, Ron Thompson, Carolyn Loewen, Helen Klassen, (staff who brings the financial report), and Ruth Friesen, the secretary to the Board.

The President, Archie Loewen, (or Arnold, when Archie is absent) opens the meeting by welcoming all, and asking the one who had volunteered for the devotional to proceed. After prayer, the agenda and minutes are amended if something needs to be added, and adopted.

Then the Board discusses matters that were brought up in the previous meeting, and reports on their conclusion or progress. They move on to hear or read reports from missionaries, and various ministry departments. If any issues arise out of these reports they are discussed, and when necessary, motions are made.

Somewhere in the middle of the evening someone starts pouring coffee and if someone has brought sweets, they are passed around. Throughout the evening, there is a general atmosphere of unity and care for one another.

New members' applications are reviewed and passed. New business is discussed, and about 10 pm, Arnold reads off a list of prayer requests that have come up throughout the evening. Everyone chooses one or two and a time of prayer follows before they adjourn.

This may seem very dull to some, but it is important work. The mission cannot move forward without some decision-making. It is these ordinary Christians, applying their common sense, which turn out to be godly insights that operates the mission.

Potential Board members can sit in on a meeting to get a sense of whether they could fit in, and must become members of the mission. They are involved in planning fundraisers, and making them happen, but this work is quite hidden. If it is more important to you to please God than to receive public recognition, this might be just the right way for you to obey and serve God. We definitely need more Board members. Call Arnold Stobbe and tell him of your interest.
