One of the benefits of teaching is that the teacher often learns his/her subject more intimately. Such was the case for me as I delved into preparing an adult Sunday School lesson on why temptation exists, and how we overcome temptation through spiritual and practical measures. Part of the hour focused on the question of "What does that escape route look like for you?” (as related to Paul's words in I Corinthians 10:13)
My contribution included several occasions during a time of temptation, when my memory was jogged back to previous similar moments in which I chose the path of sin, and never did I come from those situations with a sense of justice, or satisfaction.
Additionally, I remember well other times when I have stood firm and passed the test, and can speak confidently of the building up of my character in Christ. A fellow brother in the Lord helped me realize the significance of the presence of God's Spirit, "who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." I delight in God's ways, and the many learning opportunities He provides.
