The rainy day on Saturday, June 10, 2006, did not hold back those committed to walking, jogging, or cycling to raise funds for Western Tract Mission. They just dressed warmly, and came prepared with umbrellas, or hoods, or in the case of baby carriages, made sure the covers were water-proof.
(Only 90 year old Henry Friesen of Hague felt that he would catch a cold, if he rode the distance on his scooter, so he went along to the picnic area to help prepare for the barbecue).
There was a brief memorial ceremony for Mark Jenkins' whose life inspired this walkathon three years ago. Doug Jenkins, Mark's father, lit a lantern and had a prayer dedicating this walk.
As they gathered and waited there was only a light misting and skies that indicated rain was coming. Some experienced some light rain before they reached the Kinsmen Park for the barbecue, but the heavy rains held off until all were in, and had eaten, and were ready to go home. Then just as the prizes were being awarded, the rain came down harder and steadier.
$5,961.30 was raised. Praise the Lord!
