In John chapter 4, we see how Jesus witnessed to an immoral woman who needed the Lord. As Jesus
spoke, she saw her need of the Lord, and became spiritually thirsty for salvation. Jesus met her at
the well where this woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."
She responded, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews
have no dealings with Samaritans. She did not understand the difference between living water and
drinking water.
Jesus answered, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water
that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a
fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."
Jesus told her, "Go, call your husband and come here." Jesus knew all about her, but he asked the
question to bring conviction and repentance. Before she could have this living water, her sin had to
be dealt with.
She responded, "I have no husband."
Jesus said, "You have well said, 'I have no husband,' for you have had five husbands, and the one
whom you now have is not your husband:..."
Now under conviction, the woman said, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ).
"When He comes, He will tell us all things."
Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am He."
At this point, I believe she was converted. She left her water pot and went to town to tell the
people she had met Christ.
Many of us are not thirsty for God because we have quenched our thirst at other fountains. The
stream from God's throne of grace has its source in the smitten rock of Calvary. Thirst must be
quenched; we will quickly seek something else to alleviate our thirst. When we become satisified
with stagnant water holes the more difficult it is to seek the fresh stream. So taste and see that
the Lord is good, return to the fountain each day. Pitch your tent by the waters of life, and feast
your soul for you may!
Rev. 22:17 "And the Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!' And let him who hears say, 'Come! And let
him who thirsts come. And whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely."
John 7:37b-38. "Jesus stood and cried out, saying, 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and
drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living
water."
