I John 1:5, "God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all."
To say that God is light tells us of the sheer splendor and the radiant glory of God.
It tells us of the purity and the holiness of God. God wishes to be seen and to be known
by men. It is one of the great functions of light to guide and to make the road easy. By
this light God offers His guidance for the footsteps of men. God has made it possible for
us to have this light by sending His Son into this world.
Jesus said in John 8:12, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." Jesus had to die for us so that we could overcome the darkness of sin in the world. Matthew 27:45, "Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land." Then Jesus cried, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?" Matthew 27:45.
After this, just before He died, Jesus said, "It is finished!" John 19:30. The penalty of sin was paid in full. Now we must individually receive Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. Then we can know and experience Gods light instead of the darkness of sin. Colossians 1:13, "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of the Son of His love."
No darkness have we who in Jesus abide.
We walk in the light when we follow our guide.
Come to the light, tis shining for thee;
sweetly the light has dawned upon me;
Once I was blind, but now I can see;
The light of the world is Jesus.
(song by Philip Bliss, public domain).
Jesus has commissioned us to be the light of the world. Matthew 5:14, "You are the light of the world." Jesus tells us not to hide the light in Matthew 5:15, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Like a lighthouse for the ships, or a line of lights which mark the channel for the ships to sail to safety. A light is something to make clear the way. The people that watch our lives should be able to follow it to the cross.
