I am a new volunteer for Western Tract Mission. Let me introduce myself. My
name is Barbara-Ann (Lichty) deHaan. I was born in Ontario. After my father
finished Bible college we moved to northern Saskatchewan.

When I was 4 years old, I saw a missionary film. I told my mother later that
night, when I grew up I was going to be a nurse and teach nursing to black
girls in Africa. I never wavered from that goal. At the age of 8 at a
missionary conference I realized my need of a Saviour and gave my heart to
the Lord.
Through a variety of circumstances I finished high school at 16 and a 5 year
nursing degree by the time I was 21. I married a man who shared my vision of
serving in Africa and in 1973 we took our 15 month old son and flew to Zambia.
Indeed I got to teach nursing to black girls just like I dreamed of doing.
Our daughter was born while we were there. On returning to Canada we settled in
Biggar where my husband has his own electrical and refrigeration business. I
have continued my nursing career working in acute care, long term care, home
care and nursing instruction. April 1 I will retire from active nursing duty,
but will continue to teach part-time. I was looking for a new ministry during
this time of retirement.
I had used Mailbox Lessons in Pioneer Girls many years ago and was familiar with
the program. I applied to be a 'corrector' of the mail-box lessons. Instead I
was given the job of children's page editor. This will be a new venture for me.
Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord. They
are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."
I don't know what the Lord has planned for my retirement, but I am
looking forward to His surprises.
