SOMEWHERE A CHILD IS BORN
The city was flowing with traffic
And parking spaces were few,
For this was the week before Christmas;
Where I'd park I hadn't a clue.
Yes, this was the week before Christmas
And shoppers were filling the mall;
They were pushing and shoving and grabbing;
I was afraid there might be a brawl.
In the pushing and shoving and grabbing
I wondered if all had forgotten
That somewhere a Child was born,
Somewhere a Son was given,
And to announce the Infant's birth
The angels came from Heaven.
The eyes of the children were shining,
As they climbed onto Santa's knee,
While others raided the toy shops
To see what they could see.
Yes, others raided the toy shops,
While pulling their Moms by their hands
With their begging and crying and pleading,
They were making their demands.
In the begging and crying and pleading
I thought, "Have they not been taught
That somewhere a Child was born,
Somewhere a Son was given,
And to announce this Baby's birth
The angels came from Heaven?"
I walked all along the street
And up the avenue;
Lights glimmered and glistened and sparkled,
Always old, but ever new.
Yes, lights glimmered and glistened and sparkled
In blue, red, yellow and green,
But so few reminders of Jesus,
Jesus in the manger scene.
There were few reminders of Jesus,
And I thought, "Have they all forgotten
That somewhere a Child was born,
Somewhere a Son was given,
And to announce this awesome birth
The angels came from Heaven?"
Bells rang, I heard music and singing,
Where Santa Claus was adored;
I heard music and singing and ringing,
But too often Christ was ignored.
In the music and singing and ringing
Let's sort of pretend from the real,
Choose not Santa's sleigh bells, but church bells,
And then let's respond to their peal.
Let's respond to the peal of the church bells,
Let's go hear the story anew
That somewhere a Child was born,
Somewhere a Son was given,
And to announce this wondrous birth
The angels came from Heaven.
On Christmas Day there'll be feasting,
There'll be turkey and pudding and pies,
There'll be nuts and candies and apples,
A banquet for stomach and eyes.
Yes, nuts and candies and apples,
There'll be food in abundance and more,
But will anyone stop to say "Thank you"
To God for these gift galore?
Will anyone stop to say "Thank you"
And remember? Oh, please remember
That somewhere a Child was born,
Somewhere a Son was given,
And to announce His holy birth
The angels came from Heaven.
At Christmas it's fun to go shopping
For presents of games and toys,
And Christmas is time for family,
For lights and music and noise.
Yes, Christmas is time for family,
For food and friendship and fun,
But let's always wonder and marvel
At the miracle God has done.
Yes let's always wonder and marvel
And remember above all else
That unto us a Child was born,
Unto us a Son was given,
And to announce the Saviour's birth
The angels came from Heaven.
